What Do You See When You Look At This Collection of Rooms?

Thursday, September 25, 2014

I'm curious about what people besides me see when they look at my room collections. I pulled these the other day for a reason....Can you tell what they all have in common? I bet you can, but thought I'd ask. I'll tell you at the end what I was thinking.....

So did you guess?

I'm sure these rooms have other things in common, but what I've been noticing a lot lately is that floor lamps seem to be making a big comeback. I'm seeing them everywhere, are you? Honestly, I didn't use to love them, preferring instead a table with a lamp on it. After having decorated so many rooms, though, I've become a bigger fan of floor lamps, for a couple of reasons.  First, every room needs some tall items, and these can be taller than some tables with lamps, sometimes giving the height that a bookcase would. Also, they are so narrow and take up almost no space, so they work really well when you need that height aesthetically, or simply need light, but don't have room for a table and lamp. Finally, I am a big fan of symmetry, and as some of these examples show (especially the black and white one), you can get perfect symmetry with two floor lamps on either side of a sofa, for example. I just love the way it looks.

Here are some affordable floor lamps on sale today (which prompted this post because I am loving so many of them). I bought one not shown here, but I'l show you next week when it comes :)

Really good points. I like them for how space saving they can be. Great images!

I was going to say a touch of metallic... Man! I love floor lamps, especially now. I'm really trying to pare down my decor, and I like the clean, sleek lines of a floor lamp in a place where you can possibly get by without an end table. Love these beauties! xo Kristy

Stacy,
Love the lights, the metal touches, the symmetry, the mix of classics with a touch of something unusual.

I feel the same way about lamps. I wasn't a big fan for many years. I kept thinking back to the 80s/early 90s when everyone had cheesy floor lamps. But, they are so much better now!

I have been a fan of floor lamps for years. We have a home office that is rather dark at one end. Our floor lamp washes the ceiling with light and brightens the dark corner.

When we first built our home a hundred years ago we bought a floor lamp. It didn't fit us at the time but it would now.
