The Case For White Walls

Wednesday, May 31, 2017

I'm still a huge fan of white walls, and still have most in the rooms in my house painted in whites and off-whites. What do you think? It's definitely been the style for a while now, but I'm wondering if you all are sick of it or still as much of a fan as I am? Take a look.....

How in the world can it be Wednesday already?? (Ok it's technically Tuesday night but most of you will see this by email in the morning). And how can it be officially summer!? I can't wait to bring out the white clothes, if only the weather would change. I hope you all enjoyed the weekend, and also that I have time to write more substantive posts soon :)

House Updates: Bathroom and Back Yard

The only thing I haven't shown you in my bathroom is the shade, which arrived last week, and the mirrors, which came the week before. This room is impossible for me to photograph well because I am always shooting into the light. I've tried many times, and here is the best I could get. The shade is a spa green:

Artist Hayley Sarno's Manhattan Apartment Makeover

In the living room, the floor is painted in Farrow & Ball’s Purbeck Stone and the canvas floorcloth was designed by Sarno’s mother, Nancy Lee Carter.

This is a very short post but I hope worth it. This is the before and after Manhattan apartment of artist Hayley Samo. Isn't she so stylish an gorgeous? And her home is pretty spectacular too...

Dreamy Outdoor Space for Enjoying Summer

Friday, May 19, 2017

The weather is finally starting to warm up, which means that after months of spending time indoors, we’re finally able to venture outside and enjoy the warm breeze on our faces and the cool grass between our toes.

But, unless you have a great outdoor space where you can sit, lie back and lounge, going outside in the summer heat might feel more like a punishment. Being hot and sticky isn’t exactly relaxing, and sitting on cracked, brittle plastic outdoor furniture is hardly something I would count as gratifying.

This brings me to what this blog post is really all about: creating an outdoor space that is soothing, pleasurable, peaceful and scenic. Are you ready to do your summer in style? Well then by golly, read on!

Set Your Primer
Your outdoor space (be it a balcony, terrace, patio or deck) is like an empty canvas; you need to start off with a few simple brush strokes before you can get a sense of what the shape of the picture is going to be. It’s necessary to start at a very basic level: the color palette of the space. Real Simple suggests “sticking to a monochromatic palette.” By getting your staple pieces (the table, chairs, stools, etc.) in a neutral tone, you can work from the foundation of your backyard space upward. Buying outdoor furnishings in loud, noxious colors will quickly lead you to burn out. By getting your modern outdoor furniture in quiet tones of gray, tan or brown, the accessories you use to dress up the space will create the good vibes you’re looking for.

Accessorizing the Space
This leads us to our second point: accessorizing the space. Equipping your backyard or patio with the right modern outdoor furnishings is only one part of the equation. To make your outdoor space really pop and feel like a gateway to your own secluded garden, you’ll need the right kind of elements. HGTV recommends bringing in a cool water feature, like a water fountain. The sound of the water and the fountain’s sculptural form will turn your space into a visually and aurally resplendent space.

But what’s a good sit down without comfy throw pillows? To spice up the monochromatic palette of the sitting area, bring in color through vibrantly patterned throw pillows and rugs. If your outdoor space is small and without plants, invest in water-saving plants like succulents and cacti.

Privacy is Key
If you live in an area where your neighbors can spy on your every move, you might be less likely to venture outside for a day. Not to worry, you can sit outside and enjoy the sunshine without wondering if old Mrs. Jones can see you by building a trellis or installing a folding screen. A trellis would give the option to grow verdant, blooming vines (who doesn’t want more plants?!) while folding screens allow you to manipulate the space because they’re transitory and foldable. Should you want to let in more of the view, simply adjust a side of the folding screen—it’s that easy!

Add Art
Better Homes & Gardens rightly points out that “when used as borders for outdoor living spaces, walls can quickly get boring.” Instead of just moving an outdoor sofa up against the exterior wall and calling it a day, outfit the wall with art pieces that delight and inspire you. You can even craft your own pieces, such as by making a mosaic sundial or shibori tapestry. It’s your wall—decorate it as you please!

Don’t let a good outdoor space go to waste this summer. With a few simple adjustments, you can turn your outdoor space into your personal, private, all-natural sanctuary.

What I Love Wednesday: Summer 2017 Accessories

Tuesday, May 16, 2017

A break from the usual, which I do from time to time so as not to get bored. This is the Summer 2017 Accessories collection from Anthropologie. I think it's spectacular (especially the shoes), and I'll take one of each please. Not that I'd ever have places or time to wear them all, but it is fun to admire.

You can click the images or HERE to view the collection, and I'll see you tomorrow with a new decorating post!

Keep scrolling - the shoes are awesome, but there is so much more here.....
