Eye Candy: Crystal Chandeliers

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

A couple of years ago, I wouldn't be caught dead with I would have changed a crystal chandelier in my home to a more modern one as soon as humanly possible.  Now, when collecting these images, I was completely drawn to crystal, like the kind my mom had.  I guess what's old is new again, at least for me.

I had a client that moved into a new house where the builder had put up a very ornate crystal chandelier.  It must have been worth a small fortune.  The clients' first thought was to replace it, but by the time we were finished with the dining room it "didn't bother" any of us anymore.  By the time we were finished with the house, we all loved it and wouldn't have dreamed of changing it.

To me, chandeliers make the room.  They obviously serve a function (to provide light), but their importance in being the crown jewel of a room is just as important to me.

I LOVE a chandelier in the bathroom.  I was so disappointed recently when I asked my electrician to hang a chandlier in my bathroom.  It was just large enough that if he hung it just past where the door swings open, a portion of it would be over the tub frame. I said "So what? Go ahead and hang it."  He looked at me like I was crazy and said (1) It's against code, (2) It's incredibly dangerous, and (3) He wasn't going to do it for all the tea in China.  Ok, ok, I get it.  No chandelier over the tub.  Apparently, in the photo below, it just LOOKS like it is over the tub (that's what he told me when I presented all of my clippings showing that people do in fact hang them over tubs).

I love this one (click on it for more info) for a girl's room:

The post I did last month on my bedroom update got more hits and comments than anything I've ever posted.  And I'm convinced it is because of the chandeliers.  Here is the photo I showed:

I'm quite convinced that no where near as many people would have looked at it without those wonderful Overstock chandeliers!

Hi Stacy,
I love chandeliers as well and I'm happy to see the interior design world embracing these beautiful light fixtures again.
When we built our house, my husband did the electrical, and it was against code to have a chandelier over the bathtub. We installed a temporary, flush mount fixture until we passed inspection, and then replaced it with a chandelier. It's grounded properly, and is high enough that we don't touch it when getting in and out of the tub.
Love your examples of chandeliers. Now, I want a little one in my laundry room!

I love crystal chandeliers. My mom always had European ones in the house. I do have a cryastal chandelier over my tub (in my pink bathroom :) ). Now i'm wondering if i should be concerned!
Great post!

Great post and very important tip about chandeliers above the tub. It's always a concern.

I love crystal chandeliers also and that's something that is relatively new. I think there's beautiful and classic crystal chandeliers and some really bad faux ones. I think the more we see of the "real" thing, the more we love them.

Have a wonderful day!

Hi Stacy! I always enjoy your posts so much, you are so very gererous with the quantity of pictorial inspiration you select to share! Thank you! I hope our electrical code in Australia doesn't stop me from having a chandeleir over my proposed ensuite freestanding bath - it's taken me 18 months to convince my dear hubby of the merits in a very contemporary home! Eeek. I'm definitely keeping this info to myself!

OMG three of you have chandeliers over your tubs, or want to.....maybe it's the lawyer in me, but I must say, please take them down!!! I totally wanted to do it until the electrician pointed out the danger, and then I realized of course it is not worth the risk. Just felt I had to say it. Still love you all :)

Fabulous post! I do love crystal chandaliers I must admit. Of course IN the right home....thats the most important thing that they work for that particular space. You have shown many stunning examples here, I so agree about the chandaliers over a tub, thats WAY too risky in my opinion around here you cant even get a CO if you have an electrical outlet above a tub!!!
Great post..lots of pretties!

I love chandeliers. I just hung one up this weekend. Unfortunately, my kids do not appreciate them. But I think they are classic and can add some glam. I want to put even more in my home in different styles too. I love your post as always.

What's old is new again! So beautiful...when clean. Oh, dang...I had to say that...but it's the truth. While I'm being a bore, I also have to say that while I often value form over function, I can't get rid of my ceiling fans upstairs. Beyond all of that, they're absolutely gorgeous!

Stacy, you're not alone in wanting a chandelier in the bathroom. Yes, unfortunately, it is against code for the reason that there's a chance of electrocution. That puts it in perspective. Enjoyed looking at today's eye candy. You really go above and beyond with the numerous pics. I love it!

I think what makes chandeliers so appealing to me is when they are combined with something unexpected, which you show so beautifully here! In a bathroom (not over the tub ;)), dressing room or in the kitchen...or when in the dining room, combined with a modern or rustic table for contrast...then it totally works and looks totally fresh!

oh chandeliers how they tempt me! *sigh* next to lamps these are my 2nd weakness!

Nope chandeliers over tubs are DANGEROUS!!!Instal a catching net of some sort! Chandeliers can make even a really drab room fab! How about the chandelier in that laundry! I can just hear the commentary from Mr Tassels as I announce that I would really love to hang a chandelier in the laundry! Best done when he is away on business trip...and with any luck he might not actually notice for a month or three, by which time I can indignently exclaim " that ol thing! Its been hanging there for ages...surely you remember it?!!"

I love the staging and photography. We have a modern looking glass chandelier in our home, nothing as good as those in these photos though. I have been researching and I think after looking these photos I am going for a crystal chandelier.
