Fretwork and Chinese Chippendale Chairs

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

Doesn't it seem like fretwork is everywhere? I love it, especially in chairs.  As I'm sure most of you know, Thomas Chippendale popularized it in his chairs, which were sold and replicated extensively in  England and America.  Some of his work was inspired by Chinese metalwork and woodwork and is called "Chinese Chippendale."  That is the fretwork style that I love best, and what most of these photos represent, although I couldn't help also throwing in some O'verlays, bookcases, and accessories:

And my favorites, which I so wish I could buy (click image for more information):

And I can't get over these, at only $218 a PAIR!! I've bought this brand before and it's been good, but I haven't bought these exact ones (but I would give them a try if I needed bar stools):

I love Chinese Chippendale and have since the 1970's. Those first chairs are true classics; no matter when they were bought, anyone could still use them today!

I obviously received this via email. Also noticed the change in format requiring we click to read the full post..hope you go back to the whole post appearing with the title.

Anyway, must be a popular topic since we just wrote about this on our blog yesterday. Especially since one of our designs looks so similar to a chippendale chair. Hope you get your computer problems fixed.

Once again our taste runs in the same vein. Love love Chinese Chippendale and fretwork. I tend to like the simple lined chairs, no arches or extras, just plain and simple. Would love to have a couple of black for my dining room. Fun post full of eye candy!
Have a great rest of the week,

Stacy, I am an email subscriber and always click over to the site anyway, so it doesn't bother me at all. I love looking through all of your sponsers...but have to admit it's a little bit dangerous since I have now developed an obsession with Layla Grace and Shades of Light! Never knew about them before I saw them on your blog!!

Diane,

I do see now I published one of the same photos today that you posted yesterday. I've seen a lot of posts on the Year of the Dragon, Chinoiserie, and Chinese design in general, but I hadn't seen your post on chairs before today. I just looked, and it is lovely, though.

Stacy, I really think people just are afraid of spam, and so they use the word verification. But I have only occasional issues, and if you put it so that you have moderation on posts over 4 days old, your blog shouldn't have a problem. Blogger catches a lot of the spam too. I hate WV, and I wish everyone would get rid of it!! And lets face it, it is not difficult to make one click to visit a post on a blog....if you don't feel like visiting, I guess you aren't really that interested in what that blog might have to say.
My two cents~about the fretwork, its modern and classic and I love it too!

Love all the images..It is so nice to see one style in a single post. It is evident that they are carefully chosen. A friend of mine has a pair of Baker Chippendale I have lusted after forever...truly spectacular.

Gorgeous collection of images! That one gold staircase is amazing. I turned off my word verification. I never really have to delete comments and it didn't help anyway. Also, I'm a horrible word verifier, which is a weird thing to be bad at.
