Distracting or Just Right? Art Gallery Walls

Sunday, August 21, 2011

I don't usually post on Sundays, so this will be a really short one.  I don't usually like gallery walls because they often seem disorganized and random, and I tend to like symmetry and order. But these below are different for me...they seem to have a sense of order and balance.  You really have to know what you are doing to create a good gallery wall, and in my opinion, these are just right:

My favorite:

south shore decorating, decorating, interior decorating, interior design, design, interiors, best interior decorators, best interior designers, interior design ma, interior decorating ma, best design blogs, best interior design blogs, top decorating blogs, Stacy Curran, living Rooms, dining rooms, family rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, children's rooms, girl's room, boy's rooms, finished basements, room photos, bathrooms, master bedroom, decorated rooms, room images, black and white room, blue room, green rooms, white rooms, DIY, do it yourself

I was surprised that I LOVE this one, below.  I think it is because even though there is a lot going on with the frames, the walls are plain and the window treatment is minimal, so the art serves as a real focal point:

I love that the frames are all the same, and the mats are all the same color. And that there isn't anything to distract from the art:

It depends on my mood. But I think most of the time, I like it organized with a little bit of asymmetry. Lovely rooms!

Stop by and visit me too, if you get a chance!

Hi Stacy. First, LOVE the new look of the blog. Class act stylish. I love the second image. The art arrangement and the unexpected striped rug. Fantastic!

I love gallery walls but you definately need to consider the furniture and rest of the room if you don't want to overwhelm the space. My favourite is probably black and white frames although I love the more ecclectic looks too.

I really like gallery walls and these ones are beautiful! I have a small one started in my home but it's harder than I thought to make it look just right. This gives me some good ideas. Thanks!

I like them but I am VERY symmetrically minded so a few of these made me dizzy and would be too much for me personally. The ones that are symmetrical however are very appealing and are looks I could see using in my own home in a room or two. The first and third were my personal faves...have a good night Stacy!

I really like gallery walls as they tell so much about the dwellers of the home. They have a richness and an elegance and show the owner is a collector. Beautiful

Oh my goodness Stacy, you've totally made me feel awesome tonight! Did you see what my 2-year-old recently did to my new gallery wall? Here's the link if you missed it - http://westermanfam.blogspot.com/2011/08/looks-like-i-picked-wrong-day-to-quit.html

Thank God I had some leftover paint :D

Great examples, Stacy! I usually prefer symmetrical layouts with black or white frames. The image of the wall with the two picture ledges and more frames on the floor is my favorite, though. It implies that a true collector lives there, and the display style is unusual and intriguing.

Hi Stacey. I loved some of these pictures and disliked others. I think I'm definitely into symmetry. Those carefully displayed in exacting order were my favourites with the exception of those surrounding the plasma! I so have a pet dislike of making a TV the focus of a room!!!! My problem being the TV not the art layout!(Appologies to the rooms owner)

I really like gallery walls, some better than others of course. I actually like when they are random with something to tie everything together (all B/W for example).

An art or an art piece can be distracting to some and appreciated by others. But for an artist it's the frames and photos are not a distraction but rather a series of art work. It is important that the art piece featured will correlate with the other piece featured unless it is in an art exhibit or a museum.

I love gallery walls, all kinds! Everytime I think there's a rule for galleries, I see a beautiful gallery wall with that rule broken, so I guess it's just some je ne sais quoi for each one.
