Love or Loathe: Black Chandeliers?

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

I can't decide if I love or loathe black chandeliers.  I'm a little afraid to love them because they seem kind of goth-y to me.   I know one thing for sure, though, and that is that they won't be seen in my house, because Mr. Conspicuous Style, better known as Mr. Conspicuously Un-stylish (who still wears the same t-shirts he had in college 21 years ago) for sure could not cope with a black chandelier.  He can barely deal with the zebra rug -- it "confuses" him. He's very cute that way :) I think a black chandelier might send him right over the edge, so I don't think I'll be trying one. Here's why I love them for you more stylish couples, though:

Well we don't want Mr. C going "over the edge" and if the zebra rug has sent him into a tizzy....then a black chandy is sure to really get him going:)
While I have seen them used successfully in certain spaces such as some of the above, its not for me. I find the look too heavy, a little scary, almost looks like a huge black spider just hanging out on the ceiling:) I am much more of a purist, I like nice clear crystal chandeliers..these are kind of avante garde looking and in the right space, can work, but its not a look I personally care for.

I don't know Stacy...I hate to say it but, loathe. I do like the room with the contrasting blue shelving against the black chandelier.

Yeah Stacey, L.O.V.E.! I might need to change husbands to get one though! I'm struggling convincing him of the NEED for stock standard crystal ATM! LOL!

Been there, done that albeit it was during the 1970's. I'd never do it again because of the dust factor showing too easily.

They overwhelm the room except the bathroom photo with the rug.
Looks like I might feel like it is going to drop on my head.

I must say I agree on a lot of them, but I think they are perfect in the bedroom with the yellow chair

Oh, and I love it in the white and black dining room, and the room with the purple furniture and blue beadboard!

I love them! But I have to admit, they are a little to daring for me. I worry that I'd grow out of love with one before it wore out. Then I'd have to live with it, because Jim's not big on replacing things that aren't broken.

Split vote: love in photos, loathe in real life. Some of these photos are absolutely stunning!! But the black chandeliers I've seen in real, designed, otherwise gorgeous interiors look odd, as if trying too hard. Plus, they show dust in an instant so they require constant cleaning. Too bad, because I really adore them in editorials!!

I totally heart them! Especially the one reflected in the mirrored wall(another heart throb of mine) I would whip out the black spray paint in a heart beat if our house was not on the market. But as soon as we sell and move to a new place, I'm all over this project!

It may be a little dramatic for me, but a few of these images may have me changing my mind...

I LOVE them!! I did my teenage daughters room in hot pink, silver, black and white and purchased a $10.00 chandelier and spray painted it black and everyone loves it. It's a matter of personal taste and style. I also love them in almost every room up in your picture gallery.

I usually don't like to write negative comments but hey - you asked...I hate them. Hate them with a capital "H". They just remind me of spiders. Having said that, I do love the photos you posted and the rooms themselves are beautiful!

I love black chandeliers, every chandelier... :-) I think one should be daring sometimes in decorating and why not have a black chandelier in your kitchen (like I saw here in your post)! I think it's great. :-)
Oh and I'm doing my first giveaway ever, so stop by and have a look what you can win! :-)

I'd have to say I'm usually on the loathe side. But the one image with the egg and swan chairs makes it look pretty good. I guess there is a place for everything.

I love them. And I would love to see your thoughts on beautiful alternative or strange chandeliers.

They are not for me, but in some of these pictures they look good.

BLACK CHANDYS...LOVE OR LOATHE...
WELL, IN YOUR PICTURES YOU SHOW A GREAT SELECTION. IT SEEMS THE CHUNKY, SHORT, SQUATTY
SHAPES DON'T LEND THEMSELVES TO BLACK. THEY ARE TOO WEIGHTY AND BLACK ITSELF IS WEIGHTY. THE
LONGER FINER SHAPES LEND GOOD LINES BECAUSE THEY ARE DELICATE AND ALLOW MUCH MORE LIGHT TO
PASS THROUGH THE SPACES....GIVING THE WHOLE LOOK A MORE ETHERIAL FEEL...SO SHAPE IS THE
DECIDING FACTOR IN USING THEM IN A ROOM.
THANKS FOR ASKING

There are a few here that I totally love and I think that maybe one in my en suite would be quite fitting for a bit of bling!
