Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Project Reveal

This is a 1930's secretary desk that was in decent shape but was  rejected by the consignment store because they are apparently a dime a dozen.  I broke it in the transformation process....more on that later.  So here's how it looked -- not bad, but a little boring and didn't fit my style anymore:

I used a mix of Graphite and Old White, maybe a 3:1 ratio.

As you can see, I also broke the trellis inset two seconds in.  Oh well.  Solution?  Tear it all out and pretend it was never there.

Here it is with a full coat of paint:

Next, the sanding to reveal the wood underneath:

I wasn't in love with it it yet, so I brought it in and lived with it for a few days.  I eventually decided to add Gold Leaf Rub n' Buff over the sanded parts:

I finished it with new hardware and a coat of clear wax, and here it is now:

What do you think?  I'm very, very happy with it. I intended it to be a little darker so there would be more contrast with the walls, but I do really like this color.

You aren't kidding with the eye candy part, and your secretary is included! I love what you did, you had great vision to see it that way..it was brave but so worth the risk, love the color and the gold rubbed edges were a perfect finishing touch...beauitful!
Now those French pictures made me drool...right up my alley, some already in my files and am adding a few new ones...gorgeous!
Stop by for an amazing giveaway..a Kilim bench, its beautiful!

Amy @MaisonDecor said...

This secretary came out tremendous! No eye candy necessary! I guess they are a dime a dozen, because I have one and it has been on the list for a paint job for awhile. The trellised area on the doors presents a problem because it is covered in nailed on molding...no wonder it broke off. I was not sure how to handle it, as the interior will still show brown wood when the doors are opened. Your mistake led to a good solution. I think the color is elegant in your dining room. You can use it as a little bar for parties!

What a great before and after! I like that it is similar to the wall color. Love the french inspiration images. that gray velvet tufted sofa looks heavenly!

What a transformation. It looks so great in the room too!

Great transformation, aren't you glad the consignment shop wouldn't take it?
Now, I would stencil your walls with an oversize damask pattern with the same colour paint in a different sheen!

Sorry about the first post...new to this, what I meant to say is ..It is beautiful, I love the color and the gold is a wonderful touch..I would very much call you a 'real DIY'er'...great job...your room is fantastic.

LOVE how you finished it off. Something I noticed about the French Provensal style is the walls and the furniture blend rather then have high contrast...I love that so soothing to your senses. I would love the french look to my bedroom soothing nothing over powering yet elegant....one can dream!

What you did with the old secretary is just wonderful. I have looked everywhere for such a piece for the MBR, but if they are a dime a dozen, I can't find one at the price I am willing to pay (not much). I have just bought Old White and Graphite, thinking I would try mixing some to get that grey, and I am so glad you did it first, because now I can see how it looks!

the cape on the corner said...

that looks amazing, and it's perfect in your space.

I still cannot believe the consignment store passed on that amazing piece. I never see them in our stores and I would nab one up if I did!

I just found your blog and now you are my new crush! Love your style and the color on the secretary is amazing. I am in love with gray but still haven't painted anything gray. Love to learn more about the chalk paint. Where do you get it from?

Newest follower and can't wait to see more!

Wow, that is a BEAUTIFUL piece of furniture now! I love how you "antiqued" it with the buffing. It's so unique. I actually like it better without the trellis inset; it opens it up a lot more. Great work!

Stopping over from the Amaze Me August party. :)

I could hardly recognize the finished product from the original! You did such a nice job transforming it, and I definitely think the gold leaf was the perfect touch. For some reason it reminds me of Jefferson's estate at Monticello. Maybe because he was a francophile too!

really nice job - I like the gold highlights, it really adds to the overall look of your finish. The secretary looks wonderful in your home and you know - I don't even miss those window trellis pieces! Seems more like a china hutch without them. Less like a secretary/bookshelf. Thanks for sharing :) Diane @ home sweet homemade

The next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I mean, I know it was my choice to read, but I actually thought youd have something interesting to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you could fix if you werent too busy looking for attention.

Hi! I have been looking up Annie Sloan chalk paint and found your blog. Can you tell me if it is really worth getting? I am starting to think I need to get it. Did you sand this piece at all or just get started? Does the wax basically seal in your color?
