Minimalism

Monday, January 16, 2012

I've always said that I like all kinds of interior design styles, as long as they are well done.  And I think it's still true -- from Bohemian to Baroque to Modern to Minimalist, I'm in if it looks good.  I started longing for Minimalism when my house was full of wreaths, trees, snow globes, and gifts stacked up in the corners of the bedrooms.  Since then, I've taken the tree down and put the house back to normal, which feels a little minimalistic compared to what it was a couple of weeks ago.   But I'm not complaining - I think there is something to be said for less visual clutter. Here's my argument in favor of minimalism:

I do not consider myself a minimalist; however, the older I get, the more I do not want to be surrounded by lots of stuff. But then again, I keep shopping! Great post. I love the wall of white frames...

A minimalist I am not, but I sure like these images.

I really like the 'after' shot of the bathroom...would love to decorate a vacation home in minimalist decor...nice to get away from too much stuff!

I'm not a minimalist but I have been. These are lovely photos full of inspiration whether you are a minimalist or not.

These are stunning rooms and I love to see these photos, but whenever I pare back my own rooms to this level they feel empty, especially without artwork. That said, these are still beautiful rooms with plenty of inspiration.

Oh yes, I'm a fan. Clutter be gone.

Really? You want to give up your stuff to live like a minimalist? How comfortable are those rooms really? On a cold day like today, they feel even colder. Most of the seating pictured looks as comfortable as a chair in a doctors office. And what clues do these rooms give as to who lives there? They are too sterile for me. I hate clutter and excess stuff but a little make a house a home. And I don't think children would like to grow up in such bare rooms. They are not comforting.

Stacy, I am with you on this one. I still have not put everything back on my mantel. Kind of liking the sparse look after visual stimulation of Christmas. I am putting one piece back at a time. I don't think I have ever done this before. I need to get it back together since I have company coming on Thursday!! Thanks for the reminder, after awhile I don't see it anymore! Happy week, sweetie,

I just do not like Minamilism but I say, to each his own. I like to decorate with objects acquired over time that tell a story. I am a new follower, came over from Tina's. Glad to be on board!!! XO, Pinky

I enjoyed today's post on murals and scrolled down, since I missed yesterday. Love the serenity of less color and less stuff. Like you, it will probably never happen in my own home!

Wow, outstanding photos! Minimalism is definitely my favorite style of decor - I primarily work with bathrooms, and I design a lot of my own furniture (you can click my name to see the store that sells stuff I've designed; check their "modern" section to see what I mean about minimalism). I have to say the minimalist aesthetic is my favorite; it's so clean, and so simple, but its contrast is so drastic and compelling that it gets that extra "WOW" factor you don't really get with more standard, or more ornate, furniture. Thanks for sharing this great post!
