Open Floor Plans

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

Do you ever wonder if the open floor plan is here to stay?  I would think it is, but living in New England, where the style for so long has been lots of small rooms, it's not as prevelant as in other areas of the country.   Certainly I see it all the time in newer homes, but there are still so many beautiful antiques that would be compromised with a floor plan like these.  I think I prefer the openness, at least from the kitchen to the family room. What do you think?

This sure makes a convincing argument for open floor plans! I can attest to how nice they are to live in because the house we are in right now has it, and it is very open, warm inviting and easy. Its very welcoming....only thing I don't love is I am a bit of a fanatic in how I like things to look so with the kitchen being open to the living areas, when you are entertaining you feel pressure to keep the kitchen just so. Other than that, if you are OK giving up some of the formality, its a beautiful floor plan as you have shown here!

Wide open spaces! I love open floor plans except for the noise factor if there are a lot of activities going on in the house at the same time. Also, a super quiet dishwasher is essential if the living areas are close to the kitchen. ;-)

Oh, la, la! Take a look at this post! This is fantastic, my friend!!!

You know, we always want what we don't have. The house we lived before didn't have a very open plan, so I wanted one w/ a very open plan. We got it. Yesterday I was stressing about how open it feels. I want more privacy and not being able to see toys from everywhere I am!!! LOL

So, I am wishing a house that has an open feel, but not too open. Is that possible? :-)

Thank you so much for your sweet words yesterday. You're the best!!!

My current home has an open floor plan. It's wonderful for entertaining, and I enjoy the feeling of spaciousness it provides. But, I have to admit I prefer the formal elegance of a colonial style floor plan. I like the experience of 'discovering' each room as you walk through the home. It's more intriguing, and allows for more diversity when decorating each space.
Great post, Stacy!

STacy i loved this post!
As you know my family room is above my garage and i struggle with sometimes making my dining room a sitting area so that we have one off the kitchen. But i have to admit.. at game time, or kids party time, or whatever the occasion is, (and there always seems to be one) Its so nice to have the guys or the kids up in that room and us girls are usually drinking wine in the kitchen! I think the saving grace is that the kitchen is big enough to have some sort of entertainment space like a big table or even a little sitting area :) And the plus is they don't ALL have to be clean at the same time! :)

We also have a very open floor plan. Most of the time I like it, but occasionally I long for separate rooms. Really enjoyed seeing how others handle the open concept.

Stacy, Love this post and the pictures are great. I have an open floor plan. My kitchen opens up to the family room. I still have a private area to the living room and the dinning. Its nice when you entertain. Your guest can still talk to you while your cooking. Its also nice when you have kids. They can play or watch TV while you are getting dinner done. I do like having the living room and dinning separate.

we have an open floor plan and I love it! It is a bit more difficult to decorate but it sure makes for easy entertaining. Those are some great inspiration photos!

So gorgeous!! I love open plan houses. I don't know if I'd like to live in one I quite like the feeling of being cocooned - but they photograph beautifully, don't they?

Hi, do you have a source for the second photo pictured above? I can't find the sources for your photos. Thanks.

I think these are wonderful if you entertain. I however prefer a smaller more cocooned kitchen/eating areas...great pics...sources so I can repost? MissionHillsLife(dot)com

I really like the kitchen to be off away from the rest of the house. That's my sunny, cozy, quiet spot. Our home is small but people are surprised when they round the corner to our kitchen and it's this little world of it's own with the patio right off of it. I really don't like the sound of the TV. We have that tucked away up in the loft. Our living room and dining area are open with the cathedral ceiling so that gives me the open feeling but I still have a little get away.

I am kind of a mixed bag on this one...my ideal house (hopefully my next one - we'll see! :)) would not be open when you just walk in the door...I like the idea of having a pretty space for when random people come to deliver something where they can't see our whole house...BUT I definitely want a kitchen open to the family room. I have also been thinking it would be nice if it were open to the living room, so that when we have a party people can be in the kitchen (it's unavoidable) but also enjoy our living room which I hope to decorate beautifully! I'm thinking kitchen in the middle with living and family rooms on each side - somehow. Ah, the dilemmas. :) Beautiful post!

I Love open concept living.. I just bought a house that is a bit boxed in and we are going to take a wall down. I just cant handle being so closed in. Awesome post! The photos are amazing.

OK, I loved all the images until I got to the master bedroom/bath open floor plan. Not sure I would want that setup! It did make me realize that I am all about the open floor plan for common areas, but want my privacy in the bedroom/bath!! too funny. thanks for sharing. M.

I love it. Then I don't. There is something so cozy and warm to separate rooms, an intimacy that can't be duplicated in an open plan. But, then, I love the kitchen/family room concept as it is so engaging for a family and guests. Bottom line, I think it just depends on the house!

Really dislike open floorplans. They look like warehouses.
