Home Office Updates / 50 Favorites for Friday (Styling & Vignettes)
Thursday, May 19, 2016
The table for my office came! I think I mentioned last week that even though I found that great one for 1/2 price (you can read the saga here), it was backordered until August. I was really disappointed. I'm used to waiting, but I really just want to get this project finished up for summer, so I cancelled the order. This one was about the same price and is the one I was initially going to buy, so I bought it and sprayed the legs and hardware (I messed up the hardware a bit, but can easily change that. The legs came out great):

The bench, the picture frames, the gold bookends, the marble tray, and the lamps are from Home Goods (I scored big today). I'm still working on the vignette, but it's a good start I think. Here are a few more images:
Gorgeous Bathrooms, Living Rooms with Pops of Color, and More
Monday, February 8, 2016
Happy Monday everyone. Did you get hit with the blizzard? We did, and the kids have been home for four days. They are actually kind of bored and even though they won't admit it, I think they are eager to go back to school.
Here are some rooms I've been looking at recently, and then at the end I'll talk about and answer some questions about my family room reveal (at the end because I figure people are bored with it by now!)
Ok, about my family room (here again if you missed it).
I won't go into detail again about all of the things still to be done. For those who missed it, in a nutshell they are: move the cocktail table, fix the curtain, remove the gold candle chandelier, remove the blinds, decorate the tulip table...and things like that.
People were more critical of this reveal than usual, which is totally fine, but it made me think a lot about the room. It's all good and I welcome the comments and suggestions, but it surprised me a little because I thought it was some of my better work (although I have seen from the start that the style is less traditional and not for everyone). When I first showed it a very good friend, she said, "Is the table staying? Are you moving the sofa? I just don't get it." So don't feel badly if you were one of them who had critiques. I asked for it, I can take it, and I appreciate the honesty.
So here is what I realized:
1. People didn't like the gallery wall layout. To be honest, I threw it up there quickly so I could photograph while the sun was out (the painter had just finished). I guess it shows, and I will rearrange it, so thank you for pointing it out. I actually don't really see that it draws the eye down like some said, but enough see it that I am going to research some different layouts. Stay tuned!
2. People didn't necessarily care for the overall layout, but I like it and after much debate and rearranging to try other configurations out, we are keeping it. I can't put the sofa in front of the tv because it is too long and interferes with the opening coming into the room (above). No one in my house likes to sit straight to face the tv, either (my slugs like to lay down whenever possible), so it was planned on an angle all along. Also, like I said, we really like it. So as much as I do appreciate the suggestions, changing the layout is one I can't take.
3. You guys were 50-50 on the black stripe over the tv. I don't know how well it photographs, but it 100% hides the tv (well, maybe 95% - better than I had even hoped). But I'm not used to it yet, so I need to live with it for a while. So I can't really answer yet what will happen with that, but I can say I don't think it is a mistake to keep it, and I don't think it is a mistake to paint over it. Like most decorating, it is totally subjective.
This is where I am headed with the tulip table - I'm inspired by Cassandra at Coco & Kelley, as always:
Ok, enough about the family room for awhile, except when it is truly "done" I will take staged photos and share again :)

On a side note, I don't know how many of you have noticed, but Pinterest has changed drastically over the last several months. It's a long story that boils down to this: they think they know what you want to see more than you know what you want to see. That's why you don't see pins from your favorite bloggers or pinners anymore.
Clicking over from below is pretty much the only way you will see my pins from now on, I'm afraid:
ALSO: I had to change my Pinterest name. It shouldn't affect you if you follow (not that following matters anymore - seriously, it doesn't really anymore). But I am HERE if you are ever searching for me or something I pinned - pinterest.com/SSDHomeDecor

Family Room Reveal (with some caveats....)
Sunday, February 7, 2016
Ok, we are getting there, finally. As you know, we went with the white paint (more here if you missed it). I'm glad we did. Although I don't think either choice would have been a mistake, I love the white so there is no reason to look back or have regrets.
Here is an overview.... and then I'll list some changes we made and some issues that you may notice:
What you haven't seen and some issues:
1. I moved the couch to the other side of the room so I could add the daybed from the office to this room. It was a spontaneous decision (by me, at 3am), and we all love it. It's off to the right in this image, and you'll see it more below. Now I need something for the office (more later).
2. The redwood slab table is way off center now. It is 900 pounds and the biggest pain to move, so that is the only real downside of this new arrangement. My husband and son and 7 of my son's friends can do it, but it takes some organizing (and then I'll cook them Mexican food and brownies or something).
3. When the table is moved, I think I'm going to pull the rug out and use it under the daybed.
4. The gold candle chandelier is hanging over the sofa now. It needs to be moved to over the tulip table.
5. The window to the right of the fireplace lost its hardware during painting. Obviously, we need to fix it and the curtains will go back up.
6. The sconces will eventually be changed. And the pillows are a mess, but since this isn't a real reveal (where I would stage), I didn't bother to fix.
7. The brown wicker blinds will come down!
8. Finally, the big question. The black stripe to hide the tv. While it DOES really effectively hide the tv, I was wrong that it would be either instant love or hate for me. Instead, sometimes I love it and other times I hate it. I just need to live with it a bit and then decide. As always, comments/thoughts are welcome!
Ok, on to a more in-depth tour. I moved just a few feet to the right with each snap to show you the entire room in a circle:
And a couple of closer in shots.
This is the best I have ever photographed the sofa for color accuracy:
I do love this corner of the room:
This shot shows the curtain rod that got broken during painting....to be fixed soon. And I have to decorate the table:
The bar cart is a Home Goods score, but I haven't had time to decorate it yet. Oh, and the black thing on the windowsill is Bobby's computer monitor. I truly don't know why it is on the window sill, but it will be moved :)
They say to crouch down real low for a different perspective, and I'm glad I tried it. I kind of like this image:
Now I feel like I might be repeating images, so I'll leave you with my favorite:
Of course I will keep posting about this room as the remaining issues are addressed. But for now, I want to thank you all again for your comments and emails and advice about this room. I hope you guys know how much you helped me with this project, and I feel SO lucky to have you as readers.
