What To Do With An Empty Wall

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

The number one question I get from clients is "What do I do with my empty walls?"  I'm not sure if you can call this a trick of the trade, but whenever I have a blank wall (especially if there is not a lot of other furniture), I add a console table.  I often put garden stools or cube ottomans, or even a Moroccan pouf or two, under them to serve as extra seating, and of course art or a mirror above.  I like the look so much better than art or mirrors hanging with nothing under them. Do you agree? Take a look:

I love the look of a bar cart, too:

The next two are probably technically desks, and serve dual purposes:

I couldn't help including a few that are actually chests or sofa tables:

Oh, I completely agree with you Stacey! Without a table (or desk, etc.) grounding them, art and mirrors on walls just look like they are floating. And, I honestly think it enhances the wall pieces to have something underneath it. Such great inspiration photos in this post! :-)

Lost count of my favorites, but I love the last image so much!! I agree with you on blank spaces with nothing but art, something drastic missing. The first desk is so beautiful. Such beautiful images, Stacy.
Have a nice Thursday.

Wow! What a comprehensive study on console tables - so many beautiful examples. One of my favorite all time images is the entry with the zebra bench under the white parsons console table - LOVE that. I pinned a few but could have pinned the entire post. Thanks for taking the time to share so many beautiful examples - I could study them over and over again. xo

Great post that illustrates your point so well. Good point and as I am thinking about it I have also filled an empty wall with a console or chest, makes sense and can be adorned with lamps, small vignettes,etc.......nice post, such beautiful spaces!

I agree - a picture above a console table looks so much better. This type of table always looks so neat and you have a great selection here. Great inspiration once again.

Fantastic and this addresses a wall I am having issues with in my dining room. Think a console can work in a dining room? You have me going!

A console table is the perfect solution for an empty wall - BUT - what are the tricks of the trade for hiding unsightly electrical lamp cords? They appear to be strategically hidden in these camera shots. Do you just call the electrician and break wall? Would love to know the go-to solution.

These ideas are really perfect for walls, The color of the wall matches well with the frames, the furniture and accessories. It also emphasize the accessories when using plain colored wall. Great job!

Some interesting lights in your photos - traditional, modern and some that blur the lines between the two.
