Chairs as Works of Art

A living room is a place where people gather. It’s not utilitarian like a kitchen or bathroom - the living room exists to allow people a space to hang out, maybe watch a movie, and socialize. It’s also a great chance to show off your personal style.

Everyone needs somewhere to sit, so chairs are pretty crucial to the room. They provide function, but that doesn’t mean they have to be the same boring chairs everyone has from IKEA. A beautiful chair can be as important as a work of art and can become the focal point in your space. Do you need to tie the room together? A colorful chair can add that pop of color while uniting a theme in the space. Consider upholstering your chair in a unique fabric like soft velvet or textured burlap, something that brings tactile interest to a space. For a little variety, look for chairs with odd angles to them.

Flea markets are a great place to explore. You can often find vintage pieces for a bargain. They may need some TLC, but then you can choose exactly how you want them renovated to fit in with the look you’ve chosen for the room. Couches can visually divide a large space. A chaise lounge in a luxurious fabric is the height of chicness and comfort. Placed against the wall underneath a collection of artwork and you’ll have a hip salon area.

Variety is the spice of life, and it’s especially true when it comes to decorating. Combining materials is the best way to make a space feel eclectic. Add a few select vintage pieces and modern sleeker ones. Maybe some gnarled driftwood and glass. When grouping items together, it’s good to display an odd number - either three or five for the most eye-catching arrangements. Try to incorporate objects that are different heights to enhance variety and visual interest. 

Incorporate a patterned rug to lead the eye to your signature piece of furniture, whether it be a gorgeous chair or a decorative table. Mirrors can also make a tiny living room seem twice the size by reflecting light into the room and, if it’s placed across from a window, will draw in the feel of the outdoors. You can enhance this by adding some potted plants or flowers around the space.

Give some thought to how you want your living room to look before you go out and buy. You don’t need to splurge on everything all at once. If you’ve got a style in your head for what you want the end result to be, then you can add chairs, lamps, and art one piece at a time and by the end you’ll have an cool, cohesive space that your friends and family will want to spend time in.
